Sea of Hands

Goals

Indigenous Australians die 17 years earlier than non-Indigenous Australians and Indigenous infant mortality is three times that of non-Indigenous Australians.

ANTaR approached us with the aim of building an online campaign to raise attention to the issue of Indigenous health in Australia, and we readily agreed to help out.

Solution

With a tight budget and an even tighter deadline (4 weeks), we created a virtual Sea of Hands installation as part of the overall Close the Gap campaign. The solution allows people to add their own hand online, including being able to decorate and paint their virtual hand using the tools provided.

Results

Thanks to many late nights and weekends of development, we managed to finish in time for the media launch of the Close the Gap Campaign in Sydney. Launched by Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe (who both added their hands to our installation), the day was a huge success.

As to how successful the campaign to close the gap on Indigenous and non-Indigenous health issues will be, well only time will tell. An improvement in Indigenous health statistics will be the true test of the effectiveness of our application.
